Westsail Owner's Manual

This is the owners manual that came with my Westsail 32, #511 (11/75).  It includes not only dimensions on just about every item on and in the boat, but also constuction notes on how to put it all together.

Note: This is NOT the service manual sold by Bud Taplin through his World Cruising Yacht Co. These drawings just tell you 'what' while Bud's manual will tell you 'how' and 'why.'

My manual appearently came directly from the factory. It was only a Xerox copy of typewritten (remeber those?) pages delivered in a loose-leaf 3-ring binder. Most of the images are clear but some are a bit fuzzy/grainy. These images have been scanned at 250 DPI, 24-bit gray-scale. The images are presented here in the order in which they appeared in the binder. I know there are some duplicates and there are probably a lot of pieces missing. If anyone has any additional or updated drawings I'd be happy to add them to this collection. Just send them to me at mail@sv-galena.com.

Service Bulletins

Customer Service Bulletin No. 5 - Holding Tank Section

1. Use only one ply toilet paper or camper style toilet paper in your system.  These types of toilet paper break down in water better and help prevent possible clogging.  While end for ending the rigging

2. When pumping the holding tank overboard with your Whale Gusher Pump, be careful to notice any undue pressure on the pump handle while pumping.  This can mean something is blocking the line and further pumping can possibly cause the rubber diaphram of the pump to rupture.

3. Blockage in holding tank line could cuase the diaphram in the Whale Pump to fail.

4. Inform all guests and crew members that paper towels, cigarette butts and sanitary napkins are not to be flushed down the toilet.

Customer Service Bulletin No. 6 - Rigging Section

A good practice to follow with marine swagged rigging is to end-for-end all standing rigging at least once a year.  This prevents moisture from standing in the lower eye for extended periods of time causing a corrosion problem later on.  While end-for-ending the rigging all swags should be checked for cracking, all wire for fraying, and all turnbuckles and toggles for cracking also.

Customer Service Bulletin No. 7 - Before starting the engine on W-32

  1. Be sure that the 1 ½” valve on top of Aqualift is open.
  2. Be sure that the ¾” valve at engine seawater intake is open.
  3. Be sure that the ½” valve for muffler drain is closed.  This valve is located either in the bilge sump area under the aft floor hatch or in the small locker on the starboard side next to the aft floor hatch.

Note: If the engine does not start immediately, open the ½”muffler drain valve and continue trying to start the engine.  This will prevent water from filling up the muffler and flowing back into the engine through the exhaust manifold and causing damage to the engine.  Close the muffler drain valve when the engine starts.

Customer Service Bulletin No. 9 - Possible defect related to lifelines

It has come to our attention that there are some fittings which are part of the lifeline system in which the welds may lack structural integrity. It is important to imspect these fittings and notify us if they appear to be cracked or welded incompletely.

The fitting is the stainless steel ring used at the lifeline gates.  These rings are welded to thestainless steel sleaves which screw on to the lifeline itself. The critical point is the point at which these are welded.
